Two Cents: Is Perception Everything?

I’m curious if the mantra “Perception is Everything” is merely a modus of marketers & media types or if it’s actually a general consensus. I’m of the mind that, “you can’t judge a book by its cover.” But, I must confess, even I have mistakenly judged first impressions, based solely on my perception, or rather, misconception. And this could be of anything, from a restaurant, a shop, a person, a business or an area. Immediately, a snap judgement is made, perhaps instinctually, that forms an opinion, or perception, about some “thing” that is, at that point, baseless. Could this be why first impressions mean so much…why perception is everything?

In this week’s premier episode of “V” even the visitors’ leader, Anna, wanted to ensure they were “perceived” appropriately and “not asked anything that would paint them in a negative light.”

So, maybe everyone (myself included) needs to take a step back a little, be less Judgy McJudge and more open-minded, tolerant and interested in learning about those things we may perceive as something they may not, in fact, be…good or bad. Have an opinion, a point of view, but form it from an understanding of that “thing” (whatever it may be.) Not from a perception – or misconception – of what you think it is or should be.

Mmmm, Pie!

The order forms are out for Mama’s Kitchen’s annual Pie In the Sky Thanksgiving pie sale. San Diego’s top pastry chefs, caterers, and bakeries bake and donate Pumpkin, Pecan, Apple, and Sugar-Free Apple pies that you can purchase, with all proceeds going to help feed men, women and children affected by HIV/AIDS and cancer. Pre-ordered pies are baked fresh and delivered to any one of 20 pick-up locations throughout the county.

Knowledge is Power – Get Tested!

get-tested

There is no reason for you to NOT get an HIV test. Knowing your status keeps you (and those you love) safe and healthy. One of the easiest ways to get tested is at the San Diego LGBT Community Center. Testing is available every day of the week (Mon-Fri) courtesy of San Diego County Health and UCSD AVRC.

Speaking of UCSD AVRC, they’ve moved to a new location. UCSD’s Antiviral Research Center (AVRC) and HIV Neurobehavioral Research Center (HNRC) recently made the move from 150 W. Washington Street to 220 Dickinson Street, right behind the UCSD Medical Center. The new facility has been completely renovated to ensure that study participants receive the best possible treatment and care. Participant parking (still free) is adjacent to the new location. If you can’t make testing times at the Center, contact the AVRC at (619) 543-8080 to schedule an appointment or the HNRC at (619) 543-5050 for qualifications relating to research studies and other HIV-related neurobehavioral services.

Honor Every Veteran

On Wednesday, November 11, we celebrate Veterans’ Day. Our community has many active duty and retired LGBT veterans. The local AVER (American Veterans’ for Equal Rights) chapter will be participating in the San Diego Veterans’ Day Parade. The parade starts at 11AM on Cedar Street in Little Italy and proceeds down Pacific Highway to G Street. If you have the day off, stop somewhere along the parade route and show our heroes (all of them) some love & support.
