People, Opinions & Politics: San Diego/Philadelphia Businessman Faces Federal Charges
The Weiss family of Philadelphia has a long established reputation as very successful people and outstanding philanthropists, owning some of this city’s biggest and most popular gay and straight nightclubs and restaurants.
About five years ago, the Weiss family purchased Bourbon Street and opened Lei Lounge. They immediately got involved supporting numerous charities and civil rights causes. Michael Weiss, a long-time activist for equality is a respected Pennsylvania State and City Commissioner, has many political ties and is friends with Senators, Governors and Mayors.
Last week, the U.S. Attorney’s office indicted Michael Weiss on seven (7) federal counts including Sec. 7212. The grand jury indictment is supposedly the culmination of a three-year investigation by the IRS. Mr. Weiss was not arrested but will appear in federal court this week. He plans to plead not guilty.
The charges against Weiss have, of course, made media headlines. He is innocent until proven guilty and most of the people I’ve spoken with back east believe that he will prevail in court.
