Cody Wilde: Hot meals for college kids, in a card

We’re all aware of the current economic climate. It’s hurting the wallets of everyone, from students to business owners to taxpayers. It’s an issue for us all, especially for those attending university or who have kids away at college. With the economy in a seemingly never-ending rollercoaster, I may have a helpful new service that can save money and provide healthy meals for college students on budgets. It’s called San Diego Student Dollars.

San Diego Student Dollars was created by two college friends from the University of Colorado at Boulder, Anthony and Tyler. They brainstormed how they could help students (and their parents) enrolled in colleges and universities here in San Diego with one of the biggest financial burdens on a student’s budget: nutritional meals. The SDSD program works like a club card at participating restaurants and stores that are in the vicinity of local colleges such as USD, SDSU and the Art Institute of California, San Diego.

So, how does the SDSD card work? Simple, it allows students to eat where they live, work and study. No more cafeteria food. No more ATM Fees. And no more missed meals because of empty pockets. The card:

  • Is available to all students throughout San Diego
  • Is accepted at many local restaurants
  • Works like a personalized debit card
  • Provides access to exclusive member discounts
  • Has a balance that never expires
  • Can be used for dine in, take out or order delivery

For parents, the SDSD card provides security, value, ease of use, balance alerts and lessons in financial responsibility. For small-business owners, it helps generate new customers by bringing in college students who have big appetites. The SDSD program also helps promote those businesses involved in the program with logo and location information directly on their website, so students know exactly where to go when making dining decisions. SDSD’s online site includes student reviews of participating business along with direct links, menus & maps.

So, if you’re a “starving student” on a budget, or a small business looking to capture the attention of that often hard to reach young demographic, San Diego Student Dollar’s might be an ideal option to keep bellies full…and doors open. Visit their website or connect with them on Facebook and Twitter for more details.

Peace be with you and may green be in your wallets!
