People, Opinions & Politics: Midge Costanza, a trailblazer, pioneer and heroine
When the history of our country and government is written – when the history of the women’s movement is written – the name Midge Costanza will appear many times. She was a trailblazer, pioneer and heroine for so many of us. Indeed, she was a historic figure.
I knew Midge for well over three decades. I met her in Washington DC when she became the first woman to have an office in the White House. It was Midge who arranged the first meeting in the White House with national GLBT leaders. And, Midge was a champion for women’s rights her entire life.
Don’t ever think Midge was not proud to be a member of our community…she was very proud.
Just some months ago I had a deep discussion with Midge about her never really coming out and the many GLBT leaders/activists’ concerns about that. She understood but felt her life, her journey, was her own, as is everyone’s. Don’t ever think Midge was not proud to be a member of our community…she was very proud. She did so much for women’s and gay rights and she did it her way.
If you knew Midge, you loved her. Our nation, our government women’s and GLBT communities are better because of our sister, Midge Costanza.

I am the proud mother of two, successful, confident and caring daughters. Midge was a part of their upbringing. I had the honor to work with Midge, however what I remember most, are the deep conversations I had with her outside of the long campaign hours. She had the great talent to teach through her vibrant stories and experiences. I remember laughing heartily when I was around her – she had a very effective, lively and irreverent sense of humor. Thank you Midge for your valuable contributions to the nation, progressive thought and to my family.
