Amazon plans to invest more than $100 million in a robotics manufacturing facility in Greenwood, Indiana. The 585,000-square-foot factory is expected to open by 2028 and create 300 jobs. It would produce equipment for fulfillment centres across North America. Planned capabilities combine advanced fabrication, robotic welding, automated powder coating and assembly, supported by Amazon Web Services and AI-powered manufacturing systems. The company announced the investment on 24 September 2026.
The preceding Texas announcement
On 19 August 2026, Amazon announced a separate multibillion-dollar robotics manufacturing facility in Austin, Texas. The project was expected to add 300–500 manufacturing and engineering jobs to the company's existing Austin workforce of 17,000. Planned production would supply robotics systems for repetitive tasks and heavy lifting. The company cited engineering talent, university partnerships and the local innovation ecosystem. It also described its collaboration with the University of Texas through the Amazon Science Hub, established in 2023, offering fellowships, capstone projects and apprenticeships in machine learning and robotics.
Manufacturing already established
The earlier manufacturing base included a Westborough, Massachusetts, facility opened on 21 October 2021. Amazon reported more than 200 new manufacturing jobs there. The 350,000-square-foot building combined offices, research laboratories and production space, supplementing its North Reading site. Manufacturing mobile drive units was identified as a principal activity. At that time, the company reported deployment of more than 350,000 drive units across its facilities since introducing robotics in 2012. It also described expansion of local engineering, manufacturing, support and testing teams.
A subsequent fleet milestone
In a 30 June 2025 update, robotics vice-president Scott Dresser reported deployment of Amazon's millionth robot to a fulfillment centre in Japan. The network then spanned more than 300 facilities worldwide. The same update introduced DeepFleet, a generative AI model for coordinating robot movements. Amazon described a 10% improvement in robot travel time and said the model used inventory-movement datasets and AWS tools, including SageMaker. It described U.S. robot manufacturing using local suppliers, combined with worldwide deployment and feedback between designers, production teams and frontline employees.
- Westborough: an existing manufacturing and research base.
- Austin: a separately announced manufacturing project.
- Greenwood: planned production for the North American network.
