The planned inauguration

Dialight has scheduled the inauguration of its consolidated Penang manufacturing facility in Malaysia for 12 August 2025. The announcement brings solid-state lighting and optoelectronics production together at one site. Chief executive Steve Blair described Penang as central to serving customers internationally, particularly in Asia-Pacific. The company aims to improve processes, operating efficiency and customer service while reducing its environmental footprint. Planned guests include Malaysian state-government representatives, customers, suppliers and manufacturing partners.

The original Penang manufacturing lease

On 2 July 2012, Dialight announced that subsidiary Dialight Europe had acquired a five-year lease for a forty-thousand-square-foot manufacturing facility in Penang. The lease began on 1 July, with Dialight Penang expected to start trading and production on 1 September. The initial programme covered status-indication components for regional electronics manufacturers, followed by plans for industrial lighting fixtures and lighting for hazardous applications. A local management team experienced in electronic manufacturing had been recruited. The company described the facility as supporting its Asian growth strategy through closer customer proximity, faster access to markets and lower inventory requirements.

The smaller-factory lease announced in 2024

Dialight's 30 January 2024 regulatory announcement described a signed lease for a smaller, optoelectronics-focused production facility in Penang. Production reconfiguration was already under way, following the transfer of Malaysian lighting production to the group's factories in Mexico. A board committee chaired by Steve Blair, then senior independent director, oversaw implementation of the transformation plan announced in September 2023. The committee met regularly with senior executives. The company also described an ongoing review of its businesses, intended to streamline operations and concentrate on its core competencies, with possible small divestments of non-core assets.

The move recorded in the interim report

In its interim announcement dated 25 November 2024, covering the six months to 30 September, Dialight reported having moved to a new, smaller Penang production facility. Its manufacturing transformation programme identified:

The company linked its automation programme to labour-cost escalation over the preceding two years.
