Hovione has opened a 31,000-square-foot facility at its East Windsor, New Jersey campus. The 16 September 2026 announcement, covered by Manufacturing Dive on 18 September, says the opening completes a $100 million U.S. investment cycle.
New production capacity
- Two commercial-scale PSD-3 spray dryers double U.S. spray-drying capacity.
- The new facility is expected to employ approximately 80 people.
The earlier New Jersey expansion plan
In its separate 27 October 2025 statement, Hovione described the initial expansion phase as a 31,000-square-foot building for two size-3 spray dryers producing amorphous solid dispersions. Construction was underway and good manufacturing practice operations were then planned to begin in the second quarter of 2026. This was the timetable stated in that earlier announcement.
The 2025 statement also recorded acquisition of adjacent land for further growth. A proposed 125,000-square-foot development would support continuous and batch tableting, quality-control laboratories and research and development. That proposed additional development is distinct from the newly opened building.
The preceding two-country investment stage
Hovione's separate release published on 26 November 2024, with a 25 November dateline, reported expansions in East Windsor and Ringaskiddy, Cork, Ireland. It described the New Jersey investment as the first step in a multi-year programme covering spray drying and tableting, while Cork's spray-drying capacity increased nearly twofold. The combined projects were creating more than 40 skilled jobs across the two locations.
That release describes spray drying as converting liquid solutions into fine powders, supporting dissolution and absorption of poorly water-soluble pharmaceutical ingredients.
Related development capabilities in Portugal
In a separate 18 June 2024 announcement, Hovione reported an operational continuous-tableting research line at its Lisbon development centre. The line resulted from its partnership with GEA, announced in 2022. It replicated critical components of the commercial continuous-tableting line in Loures and could handle highly potent active pharmaceutical ingredients.
Research services head Jaime Del Campo said the equipment allowed optimization using minimal quantities of active ingredient before transfer to commercial scale. The company stated that the research line was available for existing and new projects.
