The formal opening
Dexcom inaugurated its Batu Kawan manufacturing facility in Penang on 12 November 2024. The US medical-device company's first manufacturing site outside the United States represents an investment of 2.83 billion ringgit. At the ceremony, Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the investment would bring more than 3,000 jobs. Dexcom, founded in 1999, develops continuous glucose monitoring technology for people with diabetes. Chief Operating Officer Jake Leach attended the opening.
The manufacturing expansion announced in 2020
A MIDA statement dated 23 June 2020 identified Batu Kawan Industrial Park as Dexcom's proposed third manufacturing location. Quentin Blackford, then executive vice president, chief financial officer and chief operating officer, said the company had assessed numerous potential locations before choosing the site. He described increasing awareness of Dexcom's technology and expectations for growth as the reasons for expanded manufacturing. The new site would supplement existing facilities to meet global demand. The proposal envisaged job additions over ten years in manufacturing, facilities management and manufacturing-related research and development, with provision for later expansion.
The construction contract
On 15 April 2021, Exyte announced that it had received a fast-track contract to build Dexcom's first Asian manufacturing facility. The proposed project at Batu Kawan had 1.8 million square feet of gross floor area. Its planned components included:
- Multi-storey cleanrooms and a warehouse with a dock leveller.
- A three-storey central utility building.
- A seven-storey office building with a canteen and recreation area, plus a seven-level parking structure.
Dexcom manufacturing executive David Arida said Exyte had been selected for its experience delivering projects of comparable scale and complexity.
Commercial manufacturing before the ceremony
Dexcom's annual report for 2023, filed on 8 February 2024, recorded completion of the initial construction phase in Malaysia and the start of commercial manufacturing during 2023. It listed Penang alongside San Diego and Mesa as manufacturing locations. The report described production requirements for highly controlled, clean environments to minimise contaminants affecting yields and quality. It also identified equipment design, automation, materials procurement and quality assurance among the challenges of increasing capacity.
